Have you ever stared at a lab report and thought, “Is this English?” You’re not alone. Understanding your lab results can feel like decoding a foreign language—but it’s your health, and it shouldn’t feel like a mystery.

At The HealthSavvy Advocate, we believe that knowing your numbers is the ultimate power move in preventative care. Let’s break it down.

Why Routine Labs Matter

Routine labs aren’t just for when something feels off. They’re like your body’s report card, helping to catch small issues before they turn into major health concerns.

Here are the top labs you should know—and what they mean:

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC)

  • What it checks: Red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets.

  • Why it matters: Gives clues about infections, anemia, immune health, and more.

  • Watch for: Low hemoglobin or hematocrit (could signal anemia), high WBC (possible infection).

2. Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)

  • What it checks: Electrolytes, kidney function, glucose.

  • Why it matters: Helps monitor hydration, diabetes risk, and kidney health.

  • Watch for: High glucose (diabetes risk), elevated creatinine (kidney issues).

3. Lipid Panel

  • What it checks: Total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”), HDL (“good”), triglycerides.

  • Why it matters: Heart disease risk.

  • Watch for: High LDL/triglycerides, low HDL.

4. Hemoglobin A1C

  • What it checks: 3-month average blood sugar levels.

  • Why it matters: Diabetes screening and monitoring.

  • Watch for: A1C > 5.7% = prediabetes; >6.4% = diabetes.

5. Thyroid Panel (TSH, T3, T4)

  • What it checks: Thyroid hormone levels.

  • Why it matters: Metabolism, mood, energy, fertility.

  • Watch for: High TSH = possible hypothyroidism.

When was the last time you had labs done?

  • Within the last 6 months - 6–12 months ago

  • I have no idea!

If you answered “Over a year ago” or “I have no idea!”: It’s time to schedule a wellness visit and advocate for a full workup.
